Getting Around

Columbus is easy to navigate as it is a city bounded by a major interstate, I-270, entirely encircling the city. Most residents will refer to inside 270 as “the city” and around 270 as “the suburbs.” Though that is certainly an over-simplification, it’s a good way to think about locations while you’re here. Below is a map of greater Columbus. You are located right in the middle, approximately the “M” of the city name. The major North-South highway is I-71, and East-West is I-70 (which is parallel to Route 40, the National Road). Columbus Metropolitan Airport is just north of the suburb Gahanna on the map.

COTA is our major public bus system that goes to all parts of the city on a regular basis, especially if you want to easily travel from downtown to a nearby community like the Short North, Ohio State, or German Village. Download the COTA app or go to www.cota.com to download bus routes and schedules, easily searchable by destinations.

Other than COTA and Lime scooters ($1 to unlock and 15 cents/min. to ride), Columbus is fairly car-centric. If you don’t feel like taking a bus and want to leave the downtown area, we do recommend renting a car, as taking an Uber or Lyft to every location (especially during major athletic or festival events) can quickly get pricey. But if you are staying local and to the attractions we recommended, for example, you should be able to get one at any time, day or night, within 5 minutes while you’re in the downtown. Traditional taxis are also widely available.
